    MANTRALARMANTRALARwhat is a   MANTRA         ?

That which liberates the mind from its bondages. is a mantra

    MAN – TRA

    manas - mind

     tranate - liberate

    "MANANAT TRANATE İTİ MANTRAHA"

What does this sanscrit sentence mean ?

"That which when repeated liberates from bondages, is a mantra."

     ***********************************************************************

A mantra is usually found in the form of a sanskrit syllable or word, but can also be a phrase or even a whole poem or text.

    Examples:

    Om - Om Namaha Şivaya...

SHanti mantra (Om sahana vavatu...) SHanti path ( Asato ma sat gamaya...)

Poems: Bhagavad Gita - Mahabharata- Saundarya Lahari...

    *******************************************************

Some mantras have no litteral meaning ( om - Aim - Hrim - Klim - vam - lam....)

But some others have and specially poems.

However when performing mantra sadhana the important point is not the meaning of the words of the mantra but the VIBRATION the SOUND of the mantra.

    Why?

    1. The more we try to understand a mantra the more we work with the brain (left side which is rational) and mind, therefore we go in the opposite direction to that of the mantra which aims at liberating the mind from its intellectual thinking process !

    2. Again the force of a mantra is NOT in its meaning.

The force the POWER of a mantra is in its VIBRATION.

You may have heard that specific sound can break a glass ... Likewise according to scientists the shape of water molecules changes according to the music we play to them ! If we play soft, classical music or mantras the water molecule take a regular harmonious wonderful shape similar to a mandala .. Shall we play hard music, make chaotic noise near the water, the shape turns to chaos ...

Actually it is exactly the same in our mind:

Although we cannot see the molecules or atoms that build our mind, they exist.. like exist our thoughts, emotions, dreams...

And they will be just like water molecules highly influenced by the sounds around them.

    *****************************************************************************************************************

So the mantras have a power.

Then after having understood the meaning - if any- of the mantra, we can leave it to  focus on the POWER, on the FORCE of the mantra.

    Example:

MAHA MRİTYUN JAYA MANTRA:            HEALTH at all levels

(click on the mantra to hear this  fabulous chanting )

This mantra provides HEALTH at ALL levels: physical, mental, emotional, psychic, spiritual .. It reorganises the Prana, life force, life energy in our being, thus brings again pranic balance at all levels of our existence.

It is so powerful that it is well known to have healed people with ailments declared uncurable by doctors.. This is the mantra to concquer Death. This is Lord Shiva's muksha mantra, the mantra of liberation from death, the mantra that leads to immortality.

GAYATRI MANTRA:           TRUE KNOWLEDGE - INTUITION- WISDOM

by clicking on gayatri you may hear a beautiful version om shanti

Gayatri mantra is said to be the "mother of the Vedas".. Its powers are inumerables.. From Gayatri mantra the Science of Life may be gained...

Gayatri mantra brings clear vision in the mind, it clears the veil that obstruct our understanding and brings "Viveka", the discrimination which allows us to "see" what is "right" and what is "not right", just like the Swan is able to separate milk from water when both are mixed, Gayatri mantra allows us to separate the essence of Truth lying dormant in us, from the turmoil of the mind.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In the below articles you can find these mantras and others to come, with their meanings - just to tranquillise your left brain!! - and most of all their powers -

So learning the meaning of the mantras is one "rational" thing, after which we should go beyond, and focus onto the feeling, (right brain) just the feeling, and let the experience take place.

    ********************************************************

As a summary, so as to feel and experience the power of a mantra, we should just chant the mantra without too much thinking .. and just let ourselves be immerged into its vibrations...

    Om Tat Sat

     MAHA MRITYUN JAYA MANTRA

clic on the mantra to hear it.. fabulous version 1 hour

here same but shorter version with wonderful images and quotes from Dalai Lama

                      OM TRAYAMBAKAM ॐ त्रयम्बकं

    Om Trayambakam
    Yacamahe sugandim puşti vardanam
    Urvaru kamiva bandhanat
    Mrityor mukşiya mamritat

The literal meaning of the mantra is as follows: “We worship the three-eyed one (Lord Shiva) who is fragrant (in a state of supreme bliss), and who sustains all living beings. May he liberate us from (the eternal cycle of birth and) death. May he lead us to immortality, just as the cucumber is released from its bondage (the vine to which it is attached).”

Benefits of chanting the Mahamrityunjaya mantra

The Mahamrityunjaya mantra is a potent combination of sounds that, if repeated with faith, dedication and perseverance over a period of time, leads, not only to victory over the fear of death, but eventually to victory over death itself or moksha (liberation). It is therefore known as a ‘moksha mantra’. It is stimulating and heating (unlike the Gayatri mantra, which is soothing and cooling). It bestows longevity, and is designed to cure illness. It wards off evil or negative forces by creating a protective psychic shield around the practitioner. It is said to destroy sorrow and poverty, and to fulfil all of one’s desires. Anyone who wishes to remove obstacles in life and overcome difficult situations or illness should repeat this mantra regularly. If chanted a minimum of eleven times, last thing at night, it will ensure a better sleep and more positive dreams.

The vibrations of the mantra act directly on our psychic centres (CHACRAS) and re-organise the flow of PRANA ( energy of LIFE) thus bringing our body-mind-spirit in alignement with eachother which leads to better HEALTH at ALL levels.

And if those chantings remind you "religious" chantings, please keep in mind two things :

First, the yogic Tradition is far more ancient than any religion,

Second, that we are here in the SPIRIT 's realm

And Spirit has NO religion. Spirit know no boundary, no limit, no color...

It does not mean that you should leave your religion if you have one, no! but simply that mantra chanting are not religious practices, but spiritual practices, with no limitations ...

    Om shanti
